The Shape of Pearls
By JonJiang

When it comes to pearl necklaces, we often think of strings of round pearls. However, as we mentioned earlier about the secrets of pearl color, pearls come in a wide variety of shapes. There are not just round pearls that exist in the world. While perfectly round pearls may be the most popular choice, baroque pearls are sometimes considered more unique.

According to the International Pearl Standard, the shapes of freshwater pearls can be categorized into four main categories: the round category, the oval category, the oblate category, and the irregular category. The round category can be further subdivided into regular, round and near-round. Oval shapes include short ovals and long ovals. The oblate category has two grades: high oblate and low oblate. There is only one class for irregular shaped pearls.

Round pearls are categorized as follows: 3% or less in diameter is regular; 8% or less is round; 12% or less is near-round. Classification of oval pearls: diameter difference less than or equal to 20% is short oval; diameter difference greater than 20% is long oval, common shapes are teardrop, pear-shaped. Classification of oblate pearls: the difference in diameter is less than or equal to 20% is high oblate; the difference in diameter is more than 20% is low oblate. Classification of irregular-shaped type of pearls: usually the surface is not flat and there is no obvious symmetry.

To understand the diversity of pearl shapes, we first need to understand the process of pearl formation. When external materials such as gravel enter the pearl oyster, the oyster secretes nacre to encase these intrusions to protect itself. Over time, the pearl is slowly formed. In the case of cultured pearls, it is common for people to base their pearls on a rounded core, so round pearls have a much higher success rate. However, those pearls that do not have a core will grow freely in a variety of odd shapes. But these odd shaped pearls are not that worthless, on the contrary, when they are paired with creativity, their value is instantly different.

Each shape of pearl has its own charm. Round pearls are always classic, oval pearls are lively, oblate pearls have a unique shape, and irregular shaped pearls offer more possibilities for creativity. The beauty of the world is inherently diverse, and it is that blossoming that we appreciate. While the shape of the pearl is undoubtedly an important aspect to consider when buying pearl jewelry, you should also consider the size, color and quality of the pearl. We hope that you will be able to understand how the shape of a pearl affects its price, as well as your own preferences, and that you will be able to combine all of these aspects in order to choose the perfect one.
